Sustainability

Our Commitment to Sustainability

At CUMI-EMD, sustainability is the cornerstone of our operations in the metal and minerals sector. We recognize that true industrial growth must be balanced with environmental responsibility and social progress. Our sustainability journey is built on the principles of resource efficiency, circular economy, and clean energy transition, ensuring that our growth contributes positively to both people and the planet.

Our integrated management approach aligns with ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 standards and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) on clean energy, responsible production, and climate action.

Green Power Generation: Harnessing Nature Responsibly

We are proud to generate renewable energy through our own resources, making green power a key pillar of our sustainability framework.

Our 12 MW Hydro Power Plant and the newly commissioned 10 MW Solar Power Plant together meet a major portion of our total power requirement through clean, renewable sources.

    – The Hydro Power Plant captures the natural energy of water flow to generate electricity without emissions.
    – The Solar Power Plant, designed with advanced photovoltaic technology, provides consistent, zero-carbon power through the year.

This combined capacity helps us reduce reliance on fossil fuels and grid-based electricity, positioning us as a leader in green power generation within the metal and minerals industry.
These plants are also key enablers in our journey toward 50% renewable energy by 2030 and Net Zero Emissions in the long term.

25% Reduction in GHG Emissions

Through a focused sustainability program, we have already achieved a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since FY21.
This milestone has been achieved through a combination of:

    – Fuel Switching: Transitioning from conventional fossil fuels to cleaner, low-emission alternatives.
    – Sourcing Green Power: Replacing grid energy with renewable power from our own hydro and solar plants.
    – Process Optimization: Implementing advanced control systems, waste heat recovery, and continuous monitoring for energy efficiency.

These actions have significantly lowered our carbon footprint per tonne of product.

Mid-Term Target (FY21–FY30): 50% reduction in GHG intensity from FY21 baseline Long-Term Vision: Achieve Net Zero Emissions through renewable energy expansion, carbon offsetting, and process innovation.

25% Reduction in Energy Intensity

Energy efficiency remains one of our most impactful levers for sustainability.
We have achieved a 25% reduction in energy intensity through focused technology upgrades and operational excellence:

    – Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): Installed across major equipment to optimize power usage.
    – Energy-Efficient Motors: Replacing older systems with high-efficiency motors to reduce electricity demand.
    – Process Optimization: Enhancing furnace performance, improving heat recovery, and modernizing process automation systems.

Mid-Term Target (FY21–FY30): 50% reduction in energy intensity from FY21 baseline Long-Term Vision: 50% of total energy sourced from renewable power and continuous improvement toward carbon-neutral operations.

25% Reduction in Water Intensity & Water Positive Initiatives

Water conservation is a central part of our environmental commitment.
Through robust Water Management Systems and continuous efficiency projects, we have achieved a 25% reduction in water intensity.

Our efforts include:

    – Cooling Tower and Water Recirculation Systems to minimize freshwater consumption.
    – Closed-Loop Water Systems and process reuse projects for efficient recycling.
    – Continuous Water Audits to identify conservation opportunities.

As part of our Water Positive Initiative, we have constructed a Rainwater Harvesting Pond with a capacity of 12 lakh liters, contributing to groundwater recharge and site-level sustainability.

Mid-Term Target (FY21–FY30): 50% reduction in water intensity from FY21 baseline Long-Term Vision: Achieve Water Positive Status by replenishing more water than we consume.

Eco-Balancing and Biodiversity Enhancement

We believe in fostering a balance between industrial activity and ecological preservation.
As part of our eco-restoration initiatives, we have established a Butterfly Garden within our premises — a thriving habitat that supports pollinators, native flora, and micro-ecosystems, bamboo garden, herbal garden etc

This green sanctuary enhances local biodiversity and symbolizes our broader commitment to environmental balance and community well-being.
